Everyone loves winning trophies. They’re a great reminder of your successes and can boost your confidence. We’d previously looked at the football teams with the most trophies. What about managers? Over the years, several managers have ensured their legacy in football history by repeatedly leading their teams to glory. So, who comes out on top? Here’s a countdown of the top 10 football managers with the most trophies.
Giovanni Trapattoni – 23
Clubs – Juventus, Inter, Fiorentina, Italy
Giovanni Trapattoni had a pretty successful playing career, most notably with AC Milan. As a player, he won two European titles before turning his hand to managing instead. Trapattoni is one of the few people to win the Champions League as both a player and manager. His best years came at Juventus when he won six Serie A titles and the European Cup in 1985. Trappattoni also took charge of Bayern Munich and helped them become domestic champions in 1996/97.
Luiz Felipe Scolari – 26
Clubs – Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Man United, Roma
Affectionately known as ‘Big Phil’, Luiz Felipe Scolari has seen great success throughout his career. His greatest success came when he guided Brazil to their 2002 FIFA World Cup title. He then lead the nation to the 2013 Confederation Cup Victory. It’s not just international football. Scolari managed clubs like Bunyodkor, Gremio, and Guangzhou Evergrande during his career. Although, it’s his World Cup win that really stands out amongst his achievements.
José Mourinho – 26
Clubs – GZ Evergrande, Palmeiras, Grêmio, Portugal, Brazil
You either love him or you hate him but José Mourinho has earned his place on this list. His most recent trophy win came in 2022 when Roma won the inaugural UEFA Conference League. He has also won three Champions League titles with Porto and Inter Milan. Mourinho had a big impact when managing Chelsea when he took them to three domestic titles.
Jock Stein – 26 Trophies
Clubs – Scotland, Celtic, Leeds United
Celtic’s 1966/67 team was once voted the greatest club side in the 20th century. They owe that achievement to Jock Stein. The legendary manager won 10 league titles with the Scottish side, which included 7 consecutive wins. Of his trophy wins, all but one came during his time with Celtic. The club lifted 8 Scottish Cups and 6 Scottish League Cups. He also won a Scottish Cup with Dunfermline Athletic in 1960/61.
Ottmar Hitzfeld – 28
Clubs – Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Grasshoppers, Switerzland
Ottmar Hitzfield won the Champions League twice as a manager: the first with Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and then again with Bayern Munich in 2001. He won a few major trophies with Borussia Dortmund but also found success at Bavaria. Hitzfeld won 14 trophies with them, including five Bundesliga titles. Before his retirement, he enjoyed a stint with the Swiss national team.
Carlo Ancelotti – 30
Clubs – AC Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Juventus
Carlo Ancelotti has found success with some of Europe’s biggest sides. Now managing Real Madrid, the Italian has plenty of titles to his name. During the early stages of his career, Ancelotti won two European titles and two UEFA Super Cups with AC Milan. He’s already won three Champions League trophies with Real Madrid but it seems fair to say that he’ll be adding to that total.
Valeriy Lobanovskyi – 33
Clubs – Dynamo Kyiv, Soviet Union, Ukraine
Valeriy Lobanovskyi won 30 of his trophies during his three spells at Dynamo Kyiv. He won the UEFA Super Cup once, the Ukranian top division five times, became the Soviet Champion 8 times, and many more. Lobanovskyi’s 32-year career was full of success and he was renowned for being a great tactician.
Mircea Lucescu – 35
Clubs – Besiktas, Shakhtar Donetsk, Galatasaray, Brescia, Inter Milan
Mircea Lucescu has found success around Europe with teams like Galatasaray, Dynamo Kyiev, and Inter Milan. His longest sting came with Shakhtar Donetsk where he went through 573 matches as manager. During his 12 years with the club, he helped them win 8 domestic titles, 6 Ukrainian cups and seven Ukrainian Super Cup trophies. A legend of Ukranian football, he was still managing up until his retirement at the age of 78.
Pep Guardiola – 39
Clubs – Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Man City
Pep Guardiola is only 52 years old but has already made quite a name for himself. Before coming to Manchester City, he coached two elite European clubs, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. During his time with Barcelona, he became the youngest manager to win the Champions League. He’s been at Manchester City since 2016, so he’s one of the longest-serving managers of the modern era. Guardiola has already led City to a domestic treble in 2018/19 and their first Champions League title in 2022/23.
Sir Alex Ferguson – 49 Trophies
Clubs – Aberdeen FC, Scotland, Man United
It’s no surprise to see Sir Alex Ferguson at the top of this list. He had an impressive career and deserves his place in the Hall of Fame. Obviously, his most significant spell was with Manchester United but he got the job after finding success in Europe with Aberdeen. During his 27 years with the Red Devils, he won an incredible 38 trophies and made some unforgettable memories. This includes their iconic treble win in 1998/99. His achievements at Old Trafford mean that Alex Ferguson will remain at the top of footballing history.
